The Nobel Prize in Medicine winners were announced Monday as William C. Campbell of Ireland, Satoshi Omura of Japan, and Youyou Tu of China.
Campbell and Omura were awarded for their research on roundworm parasites and discovering avermectin, a new treatment for two diseases caused by the parasites that affect millions in Africa and Asia.
Tu was awarded for discovering artemisinin, a new drug for treating malaria that has significantly lowered mortality rates among patients.
Campbell and Omura will receive half of the eight million Swedish kronor prize (about 855,000 euros), with Tu receiving the other half.
